Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of Nursing

About the role

The Department of Nursing at John Carroll University is seeking a Visiting Assistant Professor (VAP) to teach a 4-4 course load and take part in departmental service, mainly academic advising and work in the Student Health Center. The position is non-tenure track, can last up to three years and renews annually after an educator review, with a start date in Spring 2027.

Key responsibilities

• Provide a syllabus for each nursing course covering title, credits, type (lab, clinical or didactic), description, objectives, teaching strategies, instructor background, evaluation methods and required texts.
• Design and implement teaching strategies, evaluate student achievement and progress, and compare planned versus actual clinical and lab hours at the end of each course.
• Take part in department committees and follow the faculty guide Teaching at JCU: A Guide for Faculty.
• Document midterm and final grades on time, adhere to FERPA standards, supervise teaching assistants, hold office hours and follow additional syllabus requirements.

Required profile

• Proof of completion of an approved registered nursing education program.
• At least two years of nursing practice as a registered nurse.
• Master's degree in nursing or an equivalent degree (e.g. education) if the candidate holds a BSN.
• Current, valid Ohio registered nurse license.
• Desired expertise in adult health/medical-surgical, maternal/child health, psych-mental health, community health and/or critical care nursing; candidates with more than one specialty are highly desired.

Preferred qualifications include course development, CCNE accreditation experience, Nurse Practitioner certification in Adult or Family, program assessment experience, and active participation in state or national counseling organizations. The university is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
