Visiting Assistant Professor, Catholic Theology/Moral Theology

About the role

The Department of Theology & Religious Studies at John Carroll University, a private Jesuit Catholic university in University Heights, Ohio, is seeking a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor in Catholic theology or Catholic moral theology. The appointment is one year, renewable up to three times, with the first term starting in August 2027. The area of specialization is open, with preference for work at the intersection of theology, social ethics and culture.

Key responsibilities

• Teach four sections per semester (fall and spring) in introductory and upper-level undergraduate core, major/minor and master's-level courses in Catholic theology and/or moral theology.
• Support the core curriculum, the Theology & Religious Studies major/minor and the master's programs in theological education and pastoral ministry.
• Engage the Catholic Intellectual Tradition broadly, since the position includes courses in the Catholic Studies minor.
• Contribute to shared governance through department, college and university service, including faculty meetings, curriculum revision, committee work, advising students and university ministry.
• Scholarly activity is not required, though a small part of the workload may be dedicated to scholarship.

Required profile

• A Ph.D. or equivalent in Catholic theology or Catholic moral theology by August 2027.
• Demonstrated excellence in teaching Catholic theology or moral theology at the undergraduate level.
• Experience engaging the Catholic Intellectual Tradition and contributing courses to the Catholic Studies minor.
• Preferred: experience teaching a wide range of courses, high-impact pedagogies such as technology-enhanced learning, service and community-based learning and undergraduate research, and evidence of scholarship supporting teaching excellence.
