Surgical Assistant

About the role

The Surgical Assistant works in the operating rooms of Union Hospital, a Cleveland Clinic Health System facility in Dover, Ohio. This PRN position supports surgeons across multiple service lines, ensuring safe, sterile procedures and high‑quality patient care.

Key responsibilities

• Scrub in for procedures, determine and prepare required equipment, and maintain a sterile field.
• Assist the surgeon by retracting tissue, applying hemostasis, using electrocautery, clamping, ligating, and cutting tissue.
• Perform patient positioning, draping, Foley catheter insertion, and wound closure, including drainage tube placement.
• Respond to intra‑operative events, support resuscitation, and follow universal protocol safety checks.

Required profile

• Associate’s degree and graduation from an accredited Surgical Assistant program.
• Certification as a Surgical First Assistant (CSFA, CSA, or SA‑C) within the first year of hire.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred.
• Minimum two years of peri‑operative experience in an acute‑care setting.

Required skills

• Proficiency with surgical instrumentation and electrocautery (mono‑ and bi‑polar).
• Knowledge of sterile technique, infection control, and OR safety protocols.
• Ability to assess surgeon needs, anticipate equipment requirements, and manage intra‑operative supplies.
