Staff AI Engineer

About the role

Everlaw is looking for a Staff AI Engineer to help design and execute its technical strategy for applying AI in its product, which is central to its mission of advancing legal discovery and litigation technology. The role drives the work of a core squad of AI engineers and gives technical guidance to engineers across the wider engineering organization, with regular interaction with the Chief Technology Officer and other senior leaders. It is a full-time, exempt position based onsite in Oakland, California (3 days per week in the office).

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and implementation of Everlaw's technical AI strategy, including early access to unreleased models and APIs from major AI labs and open-source offerings.
• Define the overall approach to using AI at trillion-token scale.
• Guide engineers across the company in using AI, for example through feedback on design documents and code reviews, tech talks and study groups on AI research papers.
• Collaborate with software engineers, security engineers, data scientists, product leads and designers.
• Identify opportunities where advances in machine learning and AI can be applied to legal technology.

Required profile

• At least 6 years of experience in ML/AI and 8+ years overall in software engineering.
• Experience leading significant AI projects, including applied use of LLMs in production and NLP/text analysis.
• Able to collaborate across teams, explain technical concepts without jargon and share knowledge.

Required skills

• Programming in at least one scripting language such as Python.
• Pluses: retrieval-based LMs or hybrid approaches with RAG, vector and graph databases, multimodal approaches, agent building, and SaaS and distributed systems experience.

• Expected salary range of $228,000 - $288,000, depending on experience and skills.
