Research Engineer III – Multi-Agent Autonomy

About the role

The Research Engineer III will independently apply advanced engineering principles to design and implement core algorithms and software architectures for multi‑agent autonomous systems. Working at the George H.W. Bush Combat Development Complex, you will help create coordinated, heterogeneous fleets that operate in complex, unstructured environments.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain software modules for multi‑agent coordination, including task allocation and decentralized path planning.
• Produce efficient code in Python and C++ for embedded hardware and ROS2 middleware.
• Develop communication protocols and data‑sharing architectures to enable shared situational awareness.
• Integrate diverse platforms such as tactical UTVs, military‑grade UGVs, UAVs, and autonomous helicopters.
• Translate theoretical breakthroughs into field‑demonstrated reality through system experimentation and field testing on the RELLIS campus.

Required profile

• Graduate‑level education in robotics, computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field.
• Proven experience in autonomous systems or multi‑agent research.
• Ability to work independently and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams.
