PRN Newborn Hearing Screener – Neonatology

About the role

The Newborn Hearing Screener provides essential hearing screening for newborns and infants before discharge, ensuring early detection of hearing loss and supporting families with peace of mind.

Key responsibilities

• Perform pre‑testing procedures, including safe transport of newborns, placement of sensor tabs and transducer under supervision.
• Conduct hearing screenings using Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs) and/or Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) in accordance with Ohio Department of Health rules.
• Calm and comfort babies during testing, monitor and control environmental noise levels.
• Document and communicate results to families and primary care providers confidentially and within required timelines.
• Maintain equipment, troubleshoot issues, and report problems as needed.

Required profile

• High School Diploma/GED with at least one year of hospital or infant care experience, OR an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in an allied health field.
• Ability to stand, walk, and lift items up to 25 lb; normal or corrected hearing and vision.
• Commitment to infection control and universal hand‑washing procedures.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Otoacoustic Emissions (OAEs) screening equipment.
• Proficiency with Automated Auditory Brainstem Response (AABR) screening equipment.
