Principal Mechanical Design Engineer

About the role

The Principal Mechanical Design Engineer will provide strategic leadership for the design, development, and implementation of advanced mechanical and aerospace systems supporting DoD and industrial customers. This senior position drives innovation, mentors engineers, and contributes to business growth.

Key responsibilities

• Lead conceptual design and development of complex mechanical and aerospace systems, creating high‑level CAD models and manufacturing drawings in Creo, SolidWorks or AutoCAD while ensuring GD&T and DoD compliance.
• Oversee prototype manufacturing, testing protocols, and analysis of test results to optimize performance and reliability.
• Serve as the primary technical authority on large multidisciplinary projects, collaborating with executive leadership, clients, and stakeholders.
• Mentor engineers, lead technical reviews, and drive knowledge‑sharing initiatives across the division.
• Support business development through thought leadership, proposal development, and client engagement while ensuring all deliverables meet regulatory standards.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, Electrical, Systems or Materials Engineering; Master’s strongly desired.
• 10+ years of mechanical or aerospace engineering experience, including leadership of large, multidisciplinary teams.
• Proven ability to manage complex projects, solve technical challenges, and communicate findings to senior stakeholders.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency with CAD software (Creo, SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
• Experience with Finite Element Analysis tools (ANSYS, ABAQUS, Polyworks) and computational modeling.
• Strong knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack‑ups, manufacturing processes, and system optimization.
• Expertise in prototype development, testing protocol creation, and data‑driven design iteration.
