Pharmacy Technician Specialist – Sterile Products Preparation

About the role

This position is part of the inpatient pharmacy team at Ochsner Health, focused on preparing and delivering sterile admixture products for adult and pediatric patients. The technician works under pharmacist supervision to ensure safe, aseptic preparation of IV solutions, chemotherapy, and bulk manufactured products.

Key responsibilities

• Accurately prepare sterile admixture products, including IV snap‑ons, large‑volume parenterals, syringes, and chemotherapy agents using aseptic techniques.
• Operate and maintain specialized pharmacy equipment such as IV safety software and barcode verification systems.
• Perform routine cleaning and scheduled maintenance of the IV compounding room to uphold sterility protocols.
• Document and chart maintenance activities, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and accreditation standards.

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum 6 months experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
• Current Pharmacy Technician Certification from the state Board of Pharmacy.
• ASHP Sterile Product Preparation Certificate within 90 days of hire (or 5 years IV production experience in lieu, with certification obtained within 90 days).

Required skills

• Computer data‑entry proficiency and familiarity with Windows‑style applications.
• Pharmaceutical mathematics for accurate dosage calculations.
• Aseptic technique and sterile compounding proficiency.
• Knowledge of safety guidelines for handling chemotherapy agents.
• Operation of IV safety software, barcode software, and standard pharmacy equipment.
