Director of R&D, Innovation Lab (D-TECT)

About the role

The Director of R&D, Innovation Lab (D-TECT) leads multiple research and development projects and builds new project teams in the United States, driving Terumo’s mid‑ to long‑term competitiveness in the medical device sector.

Key responsibilities

• Manage and execute R&D projects under the guidance of the Deputy CTO and Discovery Center Advisor.
• Initiate and oversee new projects in collaboration with the Discovery Team in Japan and US business‑unit R&D sites.
• Provide technical support and coordinate with the Technical Support Team to meet BU needs.
• Prioritize high‑potential projects for rapid commercialization and ensure efficient hand‑over to Company R&D.
• Lead and form specialist teams, fostering cross‑functional consensus to accelerate time‑to‑market.
• Monitor industry trends, propose innovative solutions, and align projects with corporate strategy.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline or equivalent experience.
• At least 12 years of project‑management experience and 5 years in a leadership role.
• Strong knowledge of medical, engineering, and biomedical development, quality systems, and basic finance.
• Proven ability to build relationships, influence without authority, and communicate effectively.
• Experience working in a highly matrixed, global environment; willingness to travel up to 20%.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
