About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Hy-Chi Department Cook in Kearney. The Hy-Chi department brings fresh, bold flavors to customers every day, and cooks prepare hot and cold foods with authentic techniques while keeping the hot and cold cases stocked. The role is fast-paced, with continual exposure to noise, temperature extremes and cleaning chemicals, and safety training is provided.

Key responsibilities

• Greet every customer with a smile and assist them with their needs throughout the store
• Prepare woks by cleaning, heating to the right temperature and adding oil
• Cook soups and meats, prepare vegetables and sauces with spices, and combine ingredients into dishes
• Place food in hot cases, monitor quantities and refill as needed
• Fill the cold case with fresh-made food and prepare items for the next day
• Check rice when time permits and take customer orders at the Hy-Chi counter when needed
• Order product and supplies or notify the department head of needs
• Clean the work area thoroughly at the end of each shift
• Answer the phone promptly and follow Hy-Vee's dress code, hygiene standards and guidelines
• Pitch in with other tasks or special projects

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; no prior experience required, as training is provided
• Commitment to Hy-Vee's mission and a genuine passion for customer service
• Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions and to work well as part of a team
• Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
• Ability to safely use sharp knives and blades, and to handle heat and burn hazards from cooking equipment
• Ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with DOT standards
