Hy-Chi Department Cook

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Hy-Chi Department Cook in Kearney. The Hy-Chi department brings fresh, bold flavors to customers every day, and cooks in this role prepare hot and cold foods with authentic techniques, keeping the hot and cold cases stocked with freshly made product throughout the day. The position is hourly.

Key responsibilities

• Greet every customer with a smile and assist them with their needs throughout the store
• Prepare woks by cleaning with water, heating to the right temperature and adding oil
• Cook soups and meats, prepare vegetables and sauces with spices, and combine ingredients to complete dishes
• Place food in hot cases, monitor quantities and refill as necessary
• Fill the cold case with fresh-made food and prepare items for the next day after the shift
• Check rice as time permits and take customer orders at the Hy-Chi counter when needed
• Order product and supplies or notify the department head of needs
• Clean the work area thoroughly at the end of each shift
• Answer the phone promptly and provide friendly service to callers
• Follow the dress code, hygiene standards and department guidelines, and pitch in with other tasks or special projects

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; no prior experience required, as training is provided
• Commitment to Hy-Vee's mission and a genuine passion for customer service
• Ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions and to work well as part of a team
• Ability to safely use sharp knives and blades, and to handle heat and burn hazards from cooking equipment
• Ability to operate a delivery vehicle in line with DOT standards, where applicable

Required skills

• Basic math skills including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
• Clear communication with customers and co-workers
• Proper food safety, sanitation and kitchen procedures

The work is fast-paced with significant pressure to meet deadlines, with continual exposure to noise, temperature extremes and cleaning chemicals. Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment drug screen.
