Certified Surgical First Assistant (Full-Time)

About the role

The Surgical First Assistant works closely with anesthesia staff, surgeons, and the operating team to provide patient care before, during, and after surgery. This full‑time position at Phelps Health Hospital requires strict adherence to sterile technique and the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team.

Key responsibilities

• Set up each case using the surgeon’s preference cards and select appropriate instruments and prosthetic devices.
• Apply aseptic techniques, operate sterilizers, and ensure all equipment functions correctly before procedures.
• Assist the physician with patient positioning, visualization of the operative site, hemostasis, and closure of body planes.
• Monitor implantable devices, use cautery units, and apply wound dressings as ordered.
• Maintain a clean, organized workspace and manage time efficiently while working under pressure.

Required profile

• Completion of a Surgical Technologist program.
• Current Surgical Technologist certification and Basic Life Support certification (American Heart Association).
• Preferred: First Assistant certification.
• Ability to lift up to 35 lb, stand for long periods, and perform frequent walking and turning.
• Capacity to work in environments with exposure to infectious material.

Required skills

• Sterile technique and aseptic practice.
• Operation and maintenance of surgical equipment (sterilizers, cautery units, specialty devices).
• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical technology.
• Proficiency in using surgeon’s preference cards and selecting appropriate instruments.
