Business Tax Auditor

About the role

The City of Alexandria’s Finance Department seeks a detail‑oriented Business Tax Auditor to join its Revenue Division. In this role you will verify the accuracy of business tax filings and support the city’s revenue integrity.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct audits of Business License, Business Personal Property, Meals Tax, Admission Tax, and corporate financial returns.
• Interview taxpayers and business representatives, gather documentation, and review work of other staff as needed.
• Analyze tax returns for compliance, calculate adjustments, refunds, and supplemental bills.
• Identify audit opportunities based on reporting trends and assist in revenue forecasting.
• Provide recommendations on complex tax appeals and support the Business Tax Manager.

Required profile

• Thorough knowledge of auditing standards, procedures, and techniques.
• Strong understanding of business accounting, financial reporting, and accounting theory.
• Familiarity with corporate, federal, and state tax returns.
• Ability to solve problems, analyze complex operations, and interpret financial documentation such as general ledgers and fixed‑asset schedules.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills for interaction with all organizational levels.
