Bakery Cake Designer

About the role

Hy-Vee's bakery department helps customers celebrate life's big moments, and its Bakery Cake Designers bring customer visions to life, from birthday cakes and everyday treats to wedding cakes delivered and set up on site. The role is a lead position for part-time employees and works closely with the bakery team to keep production running smoothly. The anticipated starting hourly wage is $14.00 to $17.50 depending on experience.

Key responsibilities

• Greet customers, take orders at the bakery counter and assist them throughout the store
• Check orders, set up a timeline and production schedule, and check cake orders daily for size, deco pack, icing needs and dates
• Decorate bakery items, keep up with new designs and trends, and develop daily bakery orders for bakers
• Track daily retail production, check product dates, pull cases and list items to fill or replace
• Order supplies for the decorating area and check them off on receipt
• Deliver product and set up wedding cakes on site outside the store
• Communicate daily with the Bakery Manager about displays, weekly ads and special needs
• Act as a lead for part-time and other employees, instructing and reviewing their work, and participate in cross-training
• Follow sanitation procedures, keep the work area clean and safe, and answer the phone promptly

Required profile

• High school diploma or equivalent; six months or less of similar or related experience
• Ability to safely use sharp knives and blades, and to operate a delivery vehicle in line with DOT standards where applicable
• Exposure to heat, flour dust, noise, cleaning chemicals and solvents; safety training is provided
• Employment is contingent on a pre-employment drug screen

Required skills

• Strong decorating skills and awareness of cake design trends and techniques
• Math skills including fractions, decimals and percentages
• Leadership of part-time employees and clear communication with customers, co-workers and the Bakery Manager
