AmeriCorps Legal Assistant – 1 Year Term in Ithaca

About the role

The Access to Justice Project, a partnership between LawNY and AmeriCorps, is seeking a Legal Assistant to support low‑income clients in Ithaca, NY. The role provides intake, screening and outreach services, helping vulnerable individuals navigate civil law matters and connect with essential resources.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct intake interviews and screen eligibility for income‑eligible clients seeking civil legal assistance.
• Perform outreach to underserved communities and coordinate referrals to appropriate services.
• Recruit, train, and support community volunteers who assist with legal intake and client support.
• Collaborate with local human‑services agencies to enhance service delivery.
• Maintain accurate client records and contribute to project reporting.

Required profile

• At least two years of college education or equivalent experience.
• Ability to commute to the Ithaca office and commit to a 1‑year term (approximately 1,700 hours).
• Experience working with low‑income populations is preferred but not mandatory.
• Strong interest in civil law and access‑to‑justice initiatives.

Required skills

• Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
• Basic proficiency with office software for data entry and record‑keeping.
