Staff Attorney – Eviction Prevention & Foreclosure

About the role

The Ithaca office of LawNY® is seeking a full‑time Staff Attorney to join its Eviction Prevention/Foreclosure Unit. You will provide direct legal representation to low‑income clients facing eviction or foreclosure in Tompkins and Tioga Counties, helping them navigate crisis situations with compassion and expertise.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain a full‑time caseload of eligible clients in eviction and foreclosure matters.
• Develop and sustain specialized knowledge of landlord‑tenant law, foreclosure prevention, subsidized housing, and related government benefits.
• Provide advice, negotiation, litigation, loss‑mitigation advocacy, and administrative representation for low‑income clients.
• Conduct legal research, draft pleadings, motions, and other court filings.
• Negotiate loan modifications and loss‑mitigation options on behalf of homeowners.
• Appear in state and federal courts, settlement conferences, and related proceedings.

Required profile

• Admission to practice law and good standing in New York State.
• Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle for court appearances and client meetings.
• Demonstrated commitment to serving low‑income populations.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

• Salary ranging from $75,000 to $111,100 per year, based on experience.
• Eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.
