Water Quality Operator – NYS Water/Wastewater Systems

About the role

The Water Quality Operator will work primarily in the field across the Malone, Ogdensburg and Watertown areas, using a company truck for travel between home and designated worksites. The role includes on‑call rotation and responsibility for operating and maintaining small to medium water and wastewater systems.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as Chief Operator of multiple small to medium water/wastewater treatment and distribution/collection systems.
• Perform daily operations, water and wastewater testing, meter readings, service installations, pump station maintenance and repairs.
• Provide backup support for more complex systems and respond to municipal customer requests such as water turn‑offs, sewer pump issues, and troubleshooting.
• Generate regulatory reports, memos and documentation using SCADA, GIS, CMMS and HACH WIMS.
• Maintain and update system data, Standard Operating Procedures and on‑call duties.

Required profile

• High school diploma; additional vocational training or an associate/bachelor’s degree in environmental science or engineering is preferred.
• Five years of direct water/wastewater treatment experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge of NYS water and wastewater regulations and required certifications (confined space entrant/attendant/rescue).
• Strong written and verbal communication, critical‑thinking and problem‑solving abilities.

Required skills

• Proficiency with MS Office (Outlook, Excel) and MS Word.
• Experience with SCADA, HACH WIMS, GIS/GPS and Computerized Maintenance Management System software.
• Hands‑on skills in plumbing, electrical work and carpentry.
• Ability to read and interpret system design drawings and technical schematics.
