About the role
The Water Quality Senior Operator serves as the Chief Operator and Operator of Record for multiple medium to high‑complexity municipal water and wastewater treatment and distribution systems. The role is field‑based, includes on‑call rotation, and requires travel between Ogdensburg, Malone and Watertown service areas.
Key responsibilities
- Act as Chief Operator for several municipal water/wastewater systems and prepare monthly regulatory reports for NYSDEC and NYSDOH.
- Perform daily operations such as water and wastewater testing, data entry, meter readings, service installations, disconnections, and pump station maintenance.
- Serve as backup Operator of Record for additional systems of varying size and complexity.
- Respond to municipal customer requests, including investigations, water turn‑on/off, and sewer pump issues.
- Develop and deliver compliance reports and customer communications, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Utilize SCADA, GIS, CMMS, and HACH WIMS systems to support operational and maintenance activities.
- Manage on‑call duties, respond to emergencies outside regular hours, and document resolutions.
Required profile
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional vocational or degree education in environmental science, engineering or related fields preferred.
- Ten years of direct water/wastewater treatment operations experience.
- NY State Department of Health IIA/B/C/D water certifications and NYS DEC 2/2A or Grade 3/3A wastewater certification.
- Confined‑space entrant, attendant and rescue training as required by the Authority’s safety manual.
- Class D NYS driver’s license and ability to travel extensively within the service area.
- Capability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and perform physical tasks such as climbing ladders and walking long distances.
Required skills
- Proficiency with MS Outlook and Excel.
- Experience using Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software.
- Knowledge of GIS/GPS, SCADA and HACH WIMS platforms.
- Hands‑on skills in plumbing, electrical work and carpentry.
- Ability to read and interpret system design drawings and technical schematics.
