Government Affairs & Capital Region Coordinator

About the role

The Government Affairs & Capital Region Coordinator supports Riverkeeper’s mission to protect the Hudson River by advancing state and local clean‑water policies. Working closely with the Associate Director of Government Affairs, the role blends advocacy, project management, and community organizing during the New York legislative session and throughout the Capital Region.

Key responsibilities

• Advocate for clean‑water and climate‑resilience policies at state, local and occasional federal levels.
• Coordinate the development of Riverkeeper’s annual policy agenda and legislative priorities.
• Build and maintain relationships with legislators, staff, experts and partner organizations, scheduling meetings and coalition calls.
• Draft legislative memos, testimonies, budget priorities and policy recommendations.
• Organize advocacy events such as lobby days, roundtables, webinars and regional community meetings.
• Provide administrative support to the Associate Director, managing schedules, logistics and meeting materials.

Required profile

• College degree or equivalent experience in environmental policy, political science, public administration or a related field.
• 1–2 years of experience in advocacy, grassroots organizing, government affairs or community building.
• Strong research abilities using online tools, databases and complex policy topics.
• Excellent written communication skills with attention to detail.
