Director of Finance – Pathology

About the role

The Department of Pathology at the University of Miami seeks a full‑time Director of Finance to lead financial strategy, oversight and internal controls for the department. Reporting to senior leadership, the Director will ensure fiscal health, compliance and effective resource allocation across clinical, research and educational activities.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee development, implementation and administration of internal controls, operating systems and financial policies in line with GAAP, tax regulations and university guidelines.
• Manage annual, operating and capital budgets, audit processes, and prepare comprehensive financial performance reports.
• Provide financial analyses, feasibility studies and economic impact assessments for system modifications, new equipment and capital projects.
• Invest excess cash and manage investment portfolios to maximize returns while preserving safety.
• Maintain payor contract relationships, develop joint‑venture and collaborative arrangements, and support faculty compensation planning.
• Ensure compliance with university policies, conduct internal audits, and train staff on financial controls and procedures.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in a relevant field.
• Minimum 8 years of progressive finance experience, preferably in academic or healthcare settings.
• Demonstrated ability to direct, manage and evaluate department operations and to lead, motivate and develop staff.
• Strong knowledge of business and management principles and experience establishing departmental goals aligned with strategic plans.
