Correctional Officer Trainee – State of Illinois

About the role

The Correctional Officer Trainee position provides a three‑month, on‑the‑job training program for individuals who will perform security and custodial duties within the Illinois Department of Corrections. Trainees will attend the IDOC Training Academy, complete pre‑service security training, and be sworn in with an oath of office.

Key responsibilities

• Participate in eight weeks of formalized classroom and practical training covering security protocols, inmate management, and emergency response.
• Perform custodial and security duties under supervision at one of the 26 state correctional facilities.
• Maintain physical fitness standards required for correctional work and pass all screening assessments.

Required profile

• U.S. work authorization and ability to work full‑time in Illinois.
• Physical fitness meeting the level required for pre‑service screening.
• Willingness to be assigned to any correctional center across the state.

Required skills

• Ability to follow security procedures and protocols.
• Basic understanding of safety and emergency response practices.
