About the role
The Weight Enforcement Unit Chief leads the commercial vehicle size and weight enforcement program for the Illinois Department of Transportation, ensuring road safety and infrastructure protection.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain and upgrade enforcement scales to deter overweight trucks and meet federal enforcement goals.
- Collaborate with the Illinois State Police, vendors, and other state agencies on scale maintenance, weigh station operations, and related construction projects.
- Oversee the department’s X‑ray vehicle program in coordination with the Illinois State Police.
- Enforce truck weight laws (625 ILCS Chapter 15) and ensure compliance with federal code 23 CFR 657.
Required profile
- Experience in commercial vehicle weight enforcement or related transportation safety fields.
- Ability to work with multiple agencies, vendors, and internal teams to minimize scale downtime.
- Understanding of federal and state weight regulations.
Required skills
- Knowledge of vehicle weight enforcement equipment and procedures.
- Familiarity with federal transportation regulations (23 CFR 657).
