Virology Laboratory Technician

About the role

The Public Health Aerobiology Laboratory at the University of Maryland, College Park seeks motivated Virology Laboratory Technicians to support airborne influenza virus transmission research. This temporary hourly position runs from October/November 2026 through March 2027 and involves processing clinical specimens and performing high‑complexity molecular and virological assays.

Key responsibilities

• Process clinical specimens and conduct RT‑qPCR, digital PCR, ELISA, and virus titration assays.
• Maintain accurate laboratory records, follow BSL‑2 safety protocols, and work evenings or weekends as required.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific field or associate’s degree with 2 years of CLIA‑certified high‑complexity lab experience.
• Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively, with strong attention to detail and reliable work ethic.

Required skills

• Hands‑on experience with nucleic acid extraction, RT‑qPCR, digital PCR, ELISA, and automated extraction systems.
• Proficiency in accurate micropipetting, use of LIMS or electronic sample‑tracking databases, and BSL‑2 laboratory techniques.
