About the role

The University of Maryland seeks a post‑doctoral associate to isolate and detect bacterial and viral pathogens from poultry, develop natural antimicrobials, and evaluate animal health and immunity.

Key responsibilities

  • Maintain a poultry research facility, monitor health and behavior, and challenge animals with pathogenic bacteria/viruses.
  • Generate bacterial mutants by adding or deleting genes and compare gut microbiome composition between treated and control groups.
  • Conduct data analysis, prepare manuscripts, assist with grant writing, and support undergraduate and graduate students.

Required profile

  • Ph.D. in microbiology, animal science, or poultry science.
  • Experience working with BSL‑2 pathogens and animal models such as chickens or mice.
  • Ability to work independently in a laboratory setting.

Required skills

  • Handling BSL‑2 pathogens, necroscopy, euthanasia, and animal housing.
  • Microbiological culture, molecular techniques (gene cloning, expression, RT‑PCR, qRT‑PCR).
  • Mammalian cell culture, confocal microscopy, protein purification and characterization.
