Laboratory Animal Technician Assistant (Hourly)

About the role

The Department of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Maryland seeks a Laboratory Animal Technician Assistant to support research on T‑cell immunity to viral infection. The role involves animal husbandry, health monitoring, and routine laboratory tasks in BSL‑2/3 environments.

Key responsibilities

• Observe, identify, and report animal health issues; administer diets, medication, and experimental drugs.
• Assist with medical treatments, experimental procedures, and animal breeding to maintain colony stock.
• Perform routine tasks such as weighing, transporting, and collecting specimens; sterilize equipment and maintain cage hygiene.
• Manage animal inventory, supplies, and environmental controls (temperature, lighting, ventilation).
• Maintain detailed husbandry records and support compliance with biosafety and regulatory requirements.

Required profile

• High School Diploma or GED (minimum); five years of relevant research experience preferred.
• One year of experience in a laboratory animal facility supporting similar research.
• Ability to work in BSL‑3/ABSL‑3 labs and obtain required security clearance.

Required skills

• Animal husbandry practices and colony management.
• Operation of laboratory animal equipment (scales, autoclaves, cage washers, pressure washers).
• Knowledge of biosafety level 3 procedures and personal protective equipment.
• Basic computer and data entry skills for record‑keeping.
