Veterinary Technician - Oncology

About the role

VERG Brooklyn, a 24/7 emergency and specialty veterinary hospital serving the tri-state area, is looking for an experienced Veterinary Oncology Technician. You will work closely with the Oncology team to care for patients throughout their cancer treatment journey, from chemotherapy and diagnostic procedures to supporting patients and their families.

Key responsibilities

• Assist oncologists with examinations, diagnostics, procedures and treatments
• Prepare patients and safely administer chemotherapy under veterinarian direction and hospital protocols
• Monitor patients before, during and after treatments
• Perform venipuncture and place IV catheters
• Collect and prepare blood, urine, cytology and other diagnostic samples
• Assist with sedation and anesthesia when needed
• Calculate, prepare and administer medications as directed by the veterinarian
• Maintain accurate medical records and follow chemotherapy handling, safety and disposal protocols
• Communicate with clients about appointments, medications and follow-up care within the technician role
• Maintain treatment areas, equipment, medications and supplies, and help train other team members

Required profile

• Experience as a veterinary technician or assistant, comfortable with hands-on patient care in a busy hospital
• Specialty, oncology, emergency or referral experience strongly preferred
• Confident with venipuncture, catheter placement, medication administration and patient monitoring
• Organized, calm in emotionally challenging situations and able to work with doctors, technicians and other departments
