Utility Plant Supervisor – Steam Operations

About the role

The Colorado School of Mines is seeking a Utility Plant Supervisor to lead its steam production plant. This position blends hands‑on boiler operation with staff leadership, ensuring reliable, safe, and efficient steam service for campus facilities.

Key responsibilities

• Direct daily boiler and plant operations, communicating decisions to operators and senior leadership.
• Supervise, coach, and evaluate a team of five operators, including performance plans, quarterly reviews, and cross‑training.
• Create and manage 24/7 staffing schedules, ensuring coverage during absences and operational disruptions.
• Lead monthly safety training, enforce safety policies, and maintain compliance with FLSA and other regulations.
• Participate in hiring, define role requirements, and interview candidates.
• Oversee tools, equipment tracking, preventive maintenance programs, and quality standards.
• Analyze daily logs, detect anomalies, and implement corrective actions without service interruption.

Required profile

• Proven experience supervising utility plant or boiler operations staff.
• Strong knowledge of steam generation, boiler systems, and preventive maintenance.
• Ability to develop schedules, manage shift coverage, and handle emergency response.
• Familiarity with safety regulations, FLSA compliance, and documentation standards.
