Transportation Engineer (Levels I-III) – Tyler Area Office

About the role

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is seeking qualified Transportation Engineers at three progressive levels (I, II, III) to support planning, design, construction, and operations activities for projects in the Tyler Area Office. Engineers will work on a variety of transportation infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations while providing technical support on‑site.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in contract oversight, issue work orders, monitor construction schedules, and process contractor payments.
• Conduct pre‑construction meetings, public hearings, and on‑site engineering reviews.
• Review shop drawings, plans, specifications, estimates, supplemental agreements, and change orders.
• Develop complex engineering designs, layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, and cost estimates (Level II and III).
• Assess project progress, report variances, and apply project management principles for complex projects (Level III).
• Negotiate consultant contracts, testify at condemnation hearings, and train junior engineering staff (Level III).

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related science accepted by TX PELS.
• Transportation Engineer I: minimum 4 years of engineering experience.
• Transportation Engineer II: minimum 5 years of engineering experience.
• Transportation Engineer III: minimum 6 years of engineering experience.
