Traffic Systems Specialist I

About the role
The Traffic Systems Specialist I is responsible for the installation, testing, programming and maintenance of traffic management and control equipment across the state. The role involves working on‑site in varied environments, often alongside heavy traffic and other utility infrastructures, to ensure reliable operation of signals, illumination and data‑collection devices.
Key responsibilities
- Act as liaison with governmental and private entities regarding utilities, rights‑of‑way and project coordination.
- Read and interpret schematics and wiring diagrams to design, review and recommend traffic signal, illumination and data‑collection projects.
- Install, troubleshoot, program and repair traffic control devices, including operating a bucket truck for work at height.
- Maintain hardware and software for Intelligent Transportation Systems, land‑mobile radio communications and statewide traffic analysis platforms.
- Conduct inspections of contractor work to verify compliance with plans, specifications and safety standards.
- Respond to emergency situations to restore traffic signals, lighting or data‑collection equipment.
- Provide technical training to field technicians on complex radio and traffic system equipment.
- Assist in obtaining FAA approval for radio‑tower installations.
Required profile
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum two years of experience in electrical/electronic construction, troubleshooting, or traffic management systems.
- Ability to work independently while coordinating with supervisors and external partners.
- Willingness to travel statewide and work in high‑traffic environments.
Required skills
- Electrical and electronic troubleshooting.
- Interpretation of schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Installation and maintenance of traffic signal and illumination equipment.
- Experience with Intelligent Transportation Systems and traffic data‑collection devices.
