Transportation Engineer I/II/III

About the role

The Transportation Engineer role supports planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance of transportation systems. The position ensures compliance with federal and state regulations and involves regular interaction with governmental officials and private stakeholders.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain traffic engineering policies, procedures, and standards.
• Monitor contractor compliance with plans, specifications, and schedules.
• Oversee community traffic safety programs and contribute to the District Highway Safety Plan.
• Review and process Plans, Specifications & Estimates (PS&E) submissions, special specifications, and change orders.
• Collect, analyze, and forecast traffic data to support plan development.
• Provide technical expertise for traffic management systems and resolve contractor‑inspector issues.
• Assist in budget development and monitoring (Engineer II and above).
• Conduct complex traffic engineering studies, recommend safety solutions, and warrant signals and speed zones.
• Manage contracts, issue work orders, and monitor construction progress.
• Perform advanced engineering design work, including layouts, sketches, plans, and specifications.
• Support Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) operations, railroad, striping, traffic safety, and traffic systems management.
• Analyze program funding changes, schedule trends, and risk assessments for complex projects (Engineer III).

Required profile

• Follows standard engineering practices with minimal supervision.
• Experience working with governmental officials and private entities.
• Ability to manage contracts, budgets, and construction schedules.
• Strong analytical skills for data collection, forecasting, and risk analysis.
