Tax Enforcement Officer I (Municipality of Anchorage)

About the role

The Tax Enforcement Officer I joins a six‑person team responsible for ensuring compliance with Anchorage’s self‑reported tax and surcharge codes, including room, rental vehicle, tobacco, marijuana, motor fuel excise taxes and the E‑911 surcharge. The role requires strong verbal and written communication and the ability to conduct detailed desk audits of business tax returns.

Key responsibilities

• Perform desk audits of tax returns, reviewing records supplied by businesses for completeness and accuracy.
• Assess and apply late penalties, interest, and pursue collection of unpaid taxes.
• Process tax license applications and maintain confidential tax records.
• Communicate audit findings and compliance requirements to business owners and managers via phone and written correspondence.
• Compile, manage, and preserve data from self‑reported tax returns.
• Support other departmental duties as assigned.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or related field plus 1 year of accounts‑receivable experience reconciling large accounts, OR an Associate’s degree in a related field plus 3 years of accounting experience (including 1 year in accounts‑receivable).
• Legal authorization to work in the United States; no sponsorship available.
• Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
