Tax Auditor – Board of Equalization (Hybrid, Sacramento)

About the role

The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) is seeking qualified professionals to serve as Tax Auditors for the Board of Equalization. This hybrid position in Sacramento County supports the agency’s mission to collect revenue fairly and efficiently for essential public services.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct audits of sales, use, and special tax returns to verify compliance with state tax laws.
• Identify discrepancies, assess liabilities, and recommend corrective actions.
• Prepare detailed audit reports and documentation for internal review and external hearings.
• Collaborate with taxpayers and internal teams to resolve issues and improve compliance.
• Maintain accurate records and ensure adherence to CDTFA policies and procedures.

Required profile

• Eligibility for state employment in California.
• Preference given to SROA/Surplus candidates.
• New-to-state candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification.
• Strong analytical abilities and knowledge of tax regulations.
