Substation Project Engineer - AI & Automation

About the role

Leidos is looking for a Substation Project Engineer to join its Power Delivery team. The scale of substation work is growing faster than the industry can respond, so the role partners substation engineers with AI and automation teams to build co-engineering solutions that help engineers develop project strategies, follow good engineering practice and use AI to work faster. The position is fully remote, with occasional client and in-office travel, and candidates must be located in the United States, preferably in the Central Time Zone.

Key responsibilities

• Execute substation physical and P&C projects and explain why they should be designed in particular ways
• Perform quality control checks on substation physical and P&C design projects
• Read and design drawings such as one-line, three-line, schematics, wiring, plan-section, conduit and grounding drawings
• Create and check bills of materials and estimates and schedules
• Support the full project lifecycle, from scoping to final design and implementation, and work with client standards
• Work with a designer/drafter to create the required drawings and provide construction support
• Occasionally attend site visits at the customer location

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field, with four or more years of related substation design experience
• Ability to communicate clearly with internal teams and clients and meet project needs
• Desire to lead next-generation engineering strategies and remove low-level, time-consuming tasks
• Ability to meet deadlines under pressure and to work independently with sound engineering judgement
• Collaborative team player and self-starter

Required skills

• Working knowledge of protection and control design, bus calculations, relay settings, grounding and lightning studies, and AC/DC calculations
• Experience with WinIGS or CDEGS and CAD tools
• Nice to have: PE license, EI/EIT certification, master's degree, field testing and commissioning experience
