Substation Physical Designer

About the role

Leidos is looking for a skilled and experienced Substation Physical Designer to work out of its Chicago office or remotely. The role uses accepted practices and standards to create substation design drawing packages and required documents for electric power substations from 12kV to 500kV.

Key responsibilities

• Develop new or modify existing electrical layout and plan drawings of substation equipment and structures.
• Develop new or modify existing foundation layout drawings, section and elevation views, conduit layout drawings, grounding layout drawings, and control building layout and section/elevation drawings.
• Develop a complete bill of materials for all required electrical equipment and materials.
• Review and comment on equipment drawings received from vendors and manufacturers.
• Collaborate with other disciplines, such as civil engineers, and help the project team develop processes and procedures to improve efficiency.
• Perform basic engineering calculations to support design and apply client, national and state standards to each assignment.

Required profile

• HS diploma with more than 1 year of direct substation physical electrical design experience on electric utility projects.
• A combination of education and demonstrated related experience may be considered in lieu of the education and experience requirements.
• Ability to work in a team with project managers, engineers, designers and drafters.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail and quality of work product.

Required skills

• Solid understanding of design software such as MicroStation and AutoCAD.
• Proficiency with Windows-based software such as Word and Excel.
• Advanced ability to use 2D and 3D applications to prepare engineering drawings.
• Ability to learn and use new design software programs.

Preferred: an associate degree in Engineering Technology or Drafting Technology; experience with Autodesk Inventor, SDS 3D, AutoCAD, MicroStation, Autodesk ReCap and Lidar applications.

The pay range is $48,100 to $86,950, depending on factors such as education, experience and skills.
