Structural Designer - Solar PV / BESS

About the role

Atwell, a consulting, engineering and construction firm serving real estate, land development and energy markets, is looking for an experienced Structural Designer to support its Power & Energy team. The role covers structural design and drafting for utility-scale Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects, from conceptual design through IFC deliverables and construction support.

Key responsibilities

• Develop structural design drawing packages for utility-scale Solar PV and BESS projects
• Prepare and revise layouts, foundation plans, pile layouts, racking and tracker details, equipment pad layouts, steel support details and construction details
• Support design for PV trackers, fixed-tilt racking, inverter skids, transformer pads, BESS equipment pads, PCS equipment and balance-of-plant structures
• Coordinate with structural engineers, civil, electrical teams, project managers and vendors
• Incorporate markups, redlines, vendor information, geotechnical data, survey information and client comments into drawings
• Assist with material take-offs, drawing updates, as-builts and construction support documentation
• Maintain drawing quality, design consistency and compliance with codes, client standards, project specs and Atwell procedures
• Respond to design questions, RFIs and field-related drawing revisions

Required profile

• Associate's degree, technical certification or equivalent hands-on experience in structural drafting/design, civil/structural design, renewable energy design or a related field
• Minimum 3+ years of structural design or drafting experience, preferably on Solar PV, BESS, renewable energy, power delivery, industrial or civil infrastructure projects
• Experience preparing structural design packages (foundation plans, equipment layouts, details, sections, notes, schedules, construction drawings)
• Understanding of steel supports, concrete foundations, equipment pads, piles, racking systems and tracker systems
• Ability to read engineering markups, vendor drawings, geotechnical reports, survey data and project specifications

Required skills

• AutoCAD (required)
• Civil 3D, MicroStation, Revit or other structural/design platforms (a plus)
• Preferred: familiarity with PV racking, single-axis trackers, driven piles, inverter pads, transformer pads, BESS container pads and PCS equipment pads
• Preferred: experience coordinating with civil, electrical, substation, transmission and geotechnical teams; preferred: RISA, STAAD.Pro, L-Pile, Enercalc
