Staff Software Engineer – PostgreSQL & Data Platform

About the role

Beacon Biosignals is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join the Datastore team, responsible for the core data platform that stores and serves brain data from clinical studies. The role focuses on designing and scaling backend systems, including PostgreSQL data models, Kafka event pipelines, and a GraphQL API.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design and architecture of complex datastore systems, balancing trade‑offs with engineering principles.
• Partner with product, scientific, and clinical stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable data services and APIs.
• Debug and profile cross‑system issues, improving structure, test coverage, and tooling.
• Draft RFCs, guide technical design discussions, and align the team on implementation decisions.
• Mentor engineers, provide feedback, and act as a technical lead on projects.

Required profile

• 7+ years of backend development experience, with at least 3 years on data platforms, transactional systems, and event pipelines.
• Deep expertise in PostgreSQL, including schema design, indexing, and query optimization.
• Hands‑on experience with Kafka or equivalent streaming technologies.
• Proficiency in Python or Julia (Julia is a strong plus).
• Experience deploying services in Kubernetes and using IaC tools such as Terraform or Helm.
