Staff Software Engineer – Data Platform

About the role

Beacon Biosignals is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join the Datastore team, which powers the core data model and API for brain data collected in clinical studies. The role focuses on designing and scaling backend systems, including PostgreSQL schemas, Kafka event pipelines, and a GraphQL API.

Key responsibilities

• Lead design and architecture of complex data platform components, balancing trade‑offs with engineering principles.
• Partner with product, scientific and clinical stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable services and integrations.
• Debug and profile cross‑system issues, improving test coverage, tooling, and documentation.
• Draft RFCs, guide technical design discussions, and mentor other engineers.

Required profile

• 7+ years of backend development experience, with at least 3 years focused on data platforms, event pipelines, and APIs.
• Strong collaborative mindset and excellent written and verbal communication skills, especially in remote environments.

Required skills

• PostgreSQL and advanced SQL query writing and tuning.
• Kafka (or equivalent event streaming platforms).
• Python (Julia is a strong plus).
• GraphQL API development, TypeScript/JavaScript (Node.js).
• Kubernetes, container orchestration, and IaC tools such as Terraform or Helm.
