Sports Medicine Assistant – Orthopedic Clinic

About the role

This full‑time position supports an orthopedic sports medicine clinic at Ochsner Medical Complex. The assistant works closely with physicians and athletic trainers to deliver therapeutic procedures, patient education, and coordinate care both in the clinic and operating room.

Key responsibilities

• Perform therapeutic procedures such as wound care, crutch and gait training, casting, splinting, and bracing.
• Assist physicians with patient evaluation, documentation, treatment planning, and intra‑operative duties including positioning, draping, and patient care.
• Schedule diagnostic examinations and physical therapy appointments per physician orders.
• Participate in research and quality‑improvement projects.
• Educate patients on exercise programs, pathophysiology, and post‑treatment care.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Allied Health (Master’s preferred).
• Minimum 3 years of related clinical experience.
• Certifications: Certified Orthopedic Technologist (OTC), Basic Life Support (BLS), Board Certified Athletic Trainer (BOCATC).
• State license to practice and completion of an SMA residency or equivalent program.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Electronic Medical Record (EMR) documentation.
• Competence in wound care, gait training, casting, splinting, and bracing techniques.
• Ability to conduct research and quality‑improvement activities.
