Senior Software Engineer – RF Systems
quartermaster · Arlington
Job description
About the role
Quartermaster is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to build the software backbone of its RF sensing platform. You will work with RF, FPGA and hardware engineers to turn raw spectrum data captured on vessels into actionable maritime intelligence.
Key responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain high‑performance software in Rust, C and/or C++ for edge devices and cloud services.
- Architect hardware‑aware software that interfaces with SDR hardware, FPGA fabric and embedded Linux on compute‑constrained SmartMast units.
- Develop reliable streaming pipelines for IQ samples, detection events and metadata, including packetization (e.g., VITA 49) and custom TCP/UDP transport.
- Build and operate large‑scale cloud data processing pipelines on AWS (S3, IoT Core, Lambda, ECS, Kinesis) to ingest, process, store and serve high‑bandwidth RF captures.
- Collaborate with customers to define requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
- Partner with RF and DSP engineers to productionize algorithms prototyped in Python or GNU Radio.
- Own device provisioning, configuration, versioning and release tooling for remote updates.
- Establish engineering practices: automated testing, hardware‑in‑the‑loop validation, CI/CD, code reviews and documentation.
Required profile
- 4+ years of professional software development experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field.
- Strong coding and debugging skills in compiled native languages (C, C++ or Rust); production Rust experience preferred.
- Systems‑level development on resource‑constrained embedded Linux platforms, including device drivers, DMA and memory‑mapped I/O.
- Experience with IP networking and custom TCP/UDP protocol implementation.
- Hands‑on experience building large‑scale distributed data pipelines in the cloud, preferably AWS.
- 2+ years working with or adjacent to RF/SDR software; familiarity with GNU Radio, UHD/USRP, libiio, VITA 49 or SigMF is a plus.
- Active U.S. security clearance or eligibility and willingness to obtain one.
