Senior Research Scientist – Machine Learning & AI

About the role

The Kostas Research Institute at Northeastern University seeks a senior research scientist to lead applied R&D on machine learning and artificial intelligence. You will work within a multidisciplinary consortium of academic and industry partners to develop prototypes for autonomous systems, robotics, and advanced sensing.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement, and test end‑to‑end ML/AI software systems, from data ingestion to model deployment.
• Collaborate with senior engineers and scientists on government and industry contracts, providing technical contributions across autonomy, sensing, communication, and decision‑support projects.
• Prototype novel solutions and transition them into robust, deployable systems in high‑performance computing environments.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Electrical/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or related field.
• 5+ years of software engineering experience focused on ML/AI system development.
• U.S. citizenship with ability to obtain a security clearance.

Required skills

• Strong proficiency in Python and modern ML/AI workflows.
• Experience with C++ and/or Java for performance‑critical components.
• Hands‑on expertise with PyTorch, GPU‑accelerated computing, and distributed compute.
• Database knowledge: PostgreSQL/SQL and graph databases such as Neo4j or Memgraph.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GovCloud) and containerized ML pipelines.
• Version control, modular design, testing, documentation, and reproducibility best practices.
