Senior Research Scientist – Machine Learning & AI

About the role

The Kostas Research Institute at Northeastern University seeks a senior research scientist to lead R&D projects in machine learning and artificial intelligence, collaborating with academic and industry partners.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and prototype end‑to‑end ML/AI software systems, from data ingestion to deployment.
• Design, implement, and test simulation‑driven models and decision‑support tools for autonomous systems and robotics.
• Contribute technical expertise to proposals, publications, and whitepapers.
• Support government and industry contracts alongside senior engineers and scientists.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in EE, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or related field.
• 5+ years of software engineering experience focused on ML/AI systems.
• U.S. citizenship with ability to obtain a security clearance.

Required skills

• Strong proficiency in Python and modern ML/AI workflows.
• Experience with C++ and/or Java for performance‑critical components.
• Hands‑on with PyTorch, GPU/accelerated computing, and HPC environments.
• Database expertise: PostgreSQL/SQL and graph databases such as Neo4j.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GovCloud) and containerized ML pipelines.
