Senior R&D Engineer - Electrical Switchgear

About the role

Industrial Connections and Solutions, LLC, an ABB company based in Mebane, North Carolina, is hiring a Senior R&D Engineer. The role reports to the R&D Department/Local Unit Lead and oversees research and development projects from concept to implementation, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to budget.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement solutions that improve the performance, reliability and safety of electrical switchgear systems.
• Provide technical expertise in the design, analysis and optimisation of switchgear, including circuit breakers, contactors and switches.
• Use 3D CAD software to design and model switchgear components and assemblies.
• Mentor and guide junior engineers in a collaborative, innovative environment.
• Work with product development, manufacturing and quality assurance teams to integrate new technologies.
• Prepare technical reports, research papers and presentations for stakeholders.
• Enhance existing products and develop new ones meeting market needs, in line with ANSI, IEEE, NEMA and UL standards.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree (or foreign equivalent) in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering or a related field.
• 8 years of R&D experience in the electrical power equipment industry.
• 8 years of experience designing electrical equipment such as switchgears, motor controllers, power protection, power inverters, transformers or meters.
• Experience applying ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, UL or IEC standards.
• Experience working with electrical power systems, including circuit breakers, contactors and switches.
• Experience performing project management, including leading R&D projects with a stage-gate process.
