Senior Legal Counsel, Power & Land
Bitdeer Technologies Group · Austin
Job description
About the role
Bitdeer, a technology company for AI and Bitcoin mining infrastructure, is looking for an experienced transactional attorney to join its U.S. Legal team as Senior Legal Counsel, Power & Land. The role owns the legal work that moves a site from a land position to an energized facility, covering acquisitions, leases and easements, water rights, utility and interconnection arrangements, long-lead electrical equipment and the entitlements and regulatory approvals each site needs. It is a dedicated power and land role in which you own the portfolio rather than support it.
Key responsibilities
- Lead land and site transactions end to end, including purchase and sale agreements, ground and build-to-suit leases, options, easements, title and survey review, title insurance and restrictive covenants.
- Negotiate utility and power arrangements such as interconnection and transmission agreements, service agreements, substation and shared facilities agreements, and energy management and retail supply arrangements.
- Advise on interconnection strategy and queue position with transmission and distribution providers, electric cooperatives and system operators, including ERCOT, PJM, TVA and the Alberta market.
- Support site selection and diligence, including zoning, entitlements, permitting, environmental review, utility and water availability, and tax incentives.
- Lead the land use and entitlement workstream with local counsel, including rezoning, text amendments, moratoria, variances and public hearings.
- Paper and negotiate procurement of long-lead electrical equipment such as transformers, switchgear and substation equipment.
- Partner with the construction team so interconnection milestones, energization dates and construction schedules are consistent across documents.
- Act as legal point of contact for utilities, cooperatives, landowners, developers and authorities, and select and manage specialist and local counsel.
- Build the form library and standards for this work and track continuing obligations such as approval windows, notice and cure deadlines and energization covenants.
Required profile
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and active bar membership in good standing; California admission preferred, others must be eligible to register as Registered In-House Counsel in California.
- 7+ years of transactional experience at a leading law firm and/or in-house, with substantial work in real estate development, energy and power or infrastructure.
- Record of leading complex transactions end to end as the responsible attorney.
- Direct experience with utility and interconnection arrangements, including negotiations with utilities and cooperatives.
- Experience managing specialist and local counsel across multiple states, and judgment on what stays in-house.
- Ability to work with colleagues across Asia and North America, including meetings outside U.S. business hours, and to travel to project sites and hearings.
Required skills
- Practical command of real estate transactions, leasing, title and survey, easements, zoning and land use.
- Experience with construction and EPC contracting or long-lead electrical equipment procurement.
- Knowledge of ERCOT, PJM, TVA or the Alberta market; in-house experience at a data center developer, hyperscaler, IEP, utility or renewable developer is a plus.
- Familiarity with public-company disclosure obligations and with Canadian, specifically Alberta, land and power matters.
What we offer
- A culture that values authenticity and diverse perspectives, in an inclusive, respectful environment.
- Opportunities to network with industry pioneers and to develop processes and systems.
- Personal accountability, autonomy, rapid growth and learning opportunities.
- Training and mentoring.
