Senior Java Engineer – Remote

About the role

The Senior Java Engineer will lead the design, development, migration, and support of scalable Java‑based microservices and APIs in a modern cloud environment for the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain REST and GraphQL APIs, including specifications, endpoints, data models, and security controls.
• Write production‑grade Java code using Spring Boot and Hibernate, and contribute to code reviews with the technical lead.
• Collaborate with the Engineering Crew Lead and API Architect to deliver robust, scalable solutions.
• Integrate APIs with internal systems, external applications, and third‑party services, ensuring performance, reliability, and scalability.
• Document APIs clearly for consumers and manage versioning and backward compatibility.
• Participate in Tier 1 and Tier 2 on‑call operations, troubleshooting production issues and implementing enhancements.

Required profile

• 8+ years of experience building scalable modern Java services and leading technical teams.
• Proven ability to break down large legacy monoliths into independent microservices.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, Engineering or related field.
