Retail Pharmacy Intern

About the role

Hy-Vee is hiring a Retail Pharmacy Intern in Altoona, Pennsylvania, within its Pharmacy department. The intern provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service and fills prescriptions in line with state and federal statutes and regulations under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. The position is non-exempt and reports to the District Store Director, Store Manager or Pharmacy Department Manager.

Key responsibilities

• Fills and helps process prescriptions and prepares them
• Reports medication errors to the appropriate personnel
• Prepares and affixes labels to prescription containers
• Assists with inventory control, ordering and stocking merchandise, checking invoices and entering inventory data
• Assists with monthly inventory and trains employees
• Maintains cleanliness of the pharmacy and dispensing area and follows security and regulatory procedures, including Quality Assurance Programs
• Assists in other areas of the store and completes special projects as required

Required profile

• Six months or less of similar or related work experience
• Enrolled in an accredited college of pharmacy and registered with the State Pharmacy Board as an intern
• Ability to think logically or scientifically, follow technical manuals, do arithmetic calculations and handle multiple tasks at a fast pace
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally and 10 pounds frequently; clear vision beyond 20 inches and within 20 feet
• Confidentiality of customer medical information under HIPAA and of prescription pricing and costs

Working conditions include frequent noise, a fast pace in a retail setting and occasional exposure to dangerous chemicals or solvents. Equipment used includes pharmacy software, a PC, Parata Express, a hand-held unit, a pharmacy balance, scanner and calculator. Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment drug screen.
