Retail Human Resources Intern - Summer 2027

About the role

Hy-Vee offers a 10-week Retail Human Resources Internship in its Grocery department, giving students a hands-on look at HR in a real retail setting. The intern completes self-paced learning modules and receives immersive training in an assigned store, building skills in recruiting, employee relations, scheduling and more alongside an experienced management team. The internship is paid hourly.

Key responsibilities

• Complete the Retail Human Resources Activity Book within the 10-week program.
• Assist with employee performance reviews, employee relations issues, scheduling, benefits and wage-related matters.
• Learn recruiting and retention programs and help coordinate employee transfers between stores.
• Support the hiring process, including interviewing and placing specified positions.
• Help with new employee orientations and training.
• Help schedule employees, honor time-off requests and arrange coverage for call-ins.
• Handle customer complaints and follow-up correspondence, and greet customers warmly.
• Assist customers with finding products, reaching items and carrying heavy purchases.
• Attend weekly staff and assistant manager meetings, answer phones and handle confidential employee records with discretion.
• Follow the dress code, hygiene standards and company policies, and take on special projects as needed.

Required profile

• Currently pursuing a degree in an applicable field (HR or related).
• Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with employees and customers, and to build friendly, professional relationships.
• Logical thinking to solve problems and use computer systems such as word processing, spreadsheets and email.
• Physical activity is incidental; occasional floor walking and handling product for demonstrations may be required.

The intern works under the direction of the Store Director, Store Manager and HR Manager, and indirectly reports to the Talent Supervisor. Employment is contingent on passing a pre-employment drug screen.
