Research Data Analyst – Machine Learning & AI

About the role

The Defense Industrial Base Institute at Northeastern University is seeking a motivated Junior Data Researcher to support federally funded defense projects. The role involves applying machine learning and AI methods to autonomous systems, robotics, and decision‑support tools.

Key responsibilities

• Support R&D efforts to scale the Navigator methodology, including prototype modeling, simulation, design, and experimentation (40%).
• Test and validate AI/ML tools for sprints, tasks, and deliverables, recommending efficiency‑enhancing systems (40%).
• Provide subject‑matter expertise to sponsors, attend meetings, conferences, and assist with budget scoping (10%).
• Assist leadership on proposal scoping, internal system recommendations, and special projects (10%).

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s in Data Science, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics or related field.
• 2–4 years of professional experience in software engineering, data science, or applied R&D with exposure to ML/AI.
• U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a security clearance.

Required skills

• Proficiency in Python and modern ML/AI development workflows.
• Experience with machine‑learning frameworks such as PyTorch.
• Familiarity with C++ and/or Java for performance‑critical components.
• Knowledge of distributed/GPU‑enabled computing environments.
• Working knowledge of relational databases (PostgreSQL/SQL) and exposure to graph databases (Neo4j, Memgraph).
• Experience with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GovCloud) and containerized ML workflows.
• Solid software‑engineering fundamentals: version control, modular design, testing, documentation, reproducibility.
