Pro Bono Law Clerk – Expungement Team (Student)

About the role

The Michigan Advocacy Program is looking for an undergraduate or law student to join its Pro Bono Team, working directly with the Expungement division. This role supports low‑income Michiganders in clearing criminal records, opening doors to employment, housing, education, and public benefits.

Key responsibilities

• Draft and file applications to set aside convictions and related legal documents.
• Prepare briefs, eligibility letters, and other court filings.
• Communicate with clients, convey attorney‑approved advice, and gather necessary information.
• Interact with courts, police departments, and other agencies to resolve record issues.
• For 2L/3L students, represent clients in expungement hearings under attorney supervision.

Required profile

• Strong communication, analytical, and problem‑solving abilities.
• Demonstrated commitment to serving low‑income or underserved populations.
• Interest in criminal record expungement and public‑interest law.
• Familiarity with the criminal legal system is a plus but not required.
