About the role
The Michigan Poverty Law Program (MPLP) is seeking law students to join its team for a part‑time Fall Law Clerk position. Working under staff attorneys, you will support a range of poverty‑law services across Michigan.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct client interviews and assess legal problems.
- Draft pleadings, motions, and other court documents.
- Perform legal research and write memoranda on individual cases and policy issues.
- Appear in court hearings under the Michigan student practice rule.
- Assist with legislative tracking, analysis, and systemic advocacy projects.
- Deliver educational seminars and provide case consultation to low‑income clients.
Required profile
- Current law student who has completed at least one year of law school.
- Commitment to serving underserved, low‑income populations.
- Residency in Michigan for the duration of the assignment.
Required skills
- Legal research and writing.
- Drafting of pleadings and court documents.
- Client interviewing and oral advocacy.
What we offer
- 10‑20 hours per week from September 1 to December 11, 2026.
- Hourly pay of $18.
- Flexibility to work onsite at the Ypsilanti office or remotely.
