About the role
The University of Exeter’s Department of Geography is offering a fully funded PhD studentship to investigate how people, families and communities navigate the shift from nuclear operations to decommissioning. The research focuses on the Sellafield site in West Cumbria and examines changes to work, identity, and community life.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct a comprehensive literature review on industrial transition and social geography.
- Design and implement qualitative research methods (interviews, ethnography, participant observation).
- Collect and analyse data from workers, families, and community members.
- Produce academic papers, conference presentations, and a doctoral thesis.
- Engage with stakeholders at Sellafield and the wider nuclear sector.
Required profile
- Strong interest in the social and spatial dimensions of work, place, and energy transitions.
- Excellent academic record in geography, sociology, or related social sciences.
- Ability to work independently and manage a four‑year research project.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
